Guadalmina: Marbella’s Best-Kept secret

Louise Swan, December 2016 | Areas - Our view

When considering the most sought after areas in which to buy an elegant, stylish home in Marbella many people’s thoughts turn to the classic Golden Mile, opulent Sierra Blanca or swanky Puerto Banús, but for those in the know one of the best-kept secrets is the refined estate of Guadalmina.

The tranquil streets of this green and pleasant suburb do not spring instantly to mind when considering purchasing a property in Marbella—and that is just how the residents like to keep it. For they know that in reality some of the most desirable properties in the area are to be found here, with its leafy golf course, wide sandy beaches and wooded areas offering a secluded background in which to enjoy a private and relaxed lifestyle under the Spanish sun.

Guadalmina has actually long been one of the most sought after parts of Marbella—indeed it was one of the first areas to be developed as an upmarket retreat for those following the dream of sun, sea and golf.

Luxurious villa in Guadalmina

The charms of this verdant stretch of coastline were first discovered by businessman Norberto Goizueta, when he moored his yacht just offshore. He bought the finca, which at that time produced corn and wheat but decided golf and residential tourism would be a more profitable crop, and so in 1959 he opened the Guadalmina golf course. Despite the rival claims of Río Real to the east of the town, this was actually the first course in Marbella—another secret of the area not widely known. It most certainly was known by a certain Sean Connery, who back in the sixties could often be seen testing his game on what are acknowledged to be some of the best fairways in Spain. Indeed, for the former Bond actor whose love of the game is well known, it was probably a major reason why he bought a luxurious villa in Guadalmina—just as it is now for many of the area’s international residents.

The golf club, now honoured with the royal ‘Real’ title, has since expanded with the addition of another 18 hole championship course and a nine hole par-three track, as has the residential area which today is split into two—Guadalmina Alta and Baja. While both are highly desirable residential estates, the latter—with its expansive landscaped plots and proximity to the golden sands of an impressive stretch of beach bordering lush golf fairways—is the more exclusive.

Marbella, Puerto Banús and Estepona on your doorstep

Just across the coastal road is Guadalmina Alta, with an upmarket commercial centre featuring supermarket, restaurants, bars, clothes shops, beauty salons and many businesses situated between the two. Along its leafy streets you will find attractive villas and apartment complexes set within lush gardens.

All the amenities of the small town of San Pedro Alcántara are on the doorstep, while the upmarket marina of Puerto Banús with its array of designer label shops, fine dining restaurants and lively nightlife is just five minutes drive away, with Marbella centre and the lively town of Estepona ten minutes distant.
