La Zagaleta, in short, is a place of distinction, with manicured facilities, concierge services, two panoramic 18-hole golf courses, a racquet club, state-of-the-art riding and stabling centre, security and an elegant clubhouse and restaurant – all reserved for residents and their guests.
The country club has two entrances, both on the upper part of the Ronda road, where residential areas give way to open country scenery. The same road leads back to the small town of San Pedro Alcántara, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía and Marbella town in a question of ten minutes.
La Zagaleta is therefore highly private, secure and surrounded by space and natural beauty, offering true country appeal within a few kilometres of the coastal area and its amenities and services. This setting has provided the perfect location for a world class country club.
In its current form, La Zagaleta traces its roots to 1991, when a group of investors headed by Enrique Pérez Flores acquired La Baraka, the former estate of the flamboyant Saudi tycoon Adnan Kashoggi. They converted his private villa – which had been the scene of many a glamorous party and event during the 1980s – into the elegant clubhouse first of one, and later two manicured 18-hole golf courses, the first designed by Bradford Benz.
The golf courses now dominate the valleys that flow between La Zagaleta’s wooded hillsides, where deer roam and residents ride their horses in shaded beauty spots complete with waterfalls and creeks. It’s an idyllic setting in the hills above Marbella, and thanks to the very low build density remains dominated by nature and views, much as it was when this old hunting estate was bought by the Roussel family in the late 1960s.
The industrialist founders of Laboratoires Roussel, at the time France’s third-largest medical pharmaceutical company, owned not only what is today La Zagaleta, but also El Madroñal and La Reserva de Alcuzcuz, where Thierry Roussel, former husband of Christina Onassis and father of Athina Onassis-Roussel, retained a large private estate until recently. In the section that would become La Zagaleta, the Pérez family have since created one of the finest country clubs in Europe.
The views in La Zagaleta are outstanding, and thanks to an elevation of over 150 metres offer a wide panorama that takes in mountain scenery, golf valleys and the coastal strip of Marbella before fanning out along the shoreline and Mediterranean Sea to include clear vistas of Gibraltar and North Africa.
La Zagaleta is a villa suburb. There are no apartments, penthouses, townhouses or semi-detached properties here, only private villas set upon extensive plots of 3000 m2 or more. Even so, many owners have acquired much larger areas upon which to build what can only be described as mansions.
